Beekeeping | how to build top bar beehives.

We are preparing for the big event, finding out what's underneath our shed. We are building these hives in case there is an active colony. We want to be prepared.

Here are the materials needed to build 1 hive:
MATERIALS LIST:
2 pieces of 14½-by-12-by-1-inch plywood (for the hive end pieces)
Two 1½-inch square pieces of 1/2-inch hardware cloth
1 piece of 10-by-41-by-1-inch plywood (for the hive base)
2 pieces of 12-by-41-by-1-inch plywood (for the hive sides)
28 pieces of 19-by-1⅜-by-1-inch plywood (for top bars)
1 piece of 9-by-43-inch plywood (for the lid)
1 box of wood screws
Exterior grade glue
Sheet of galvanized metal (for the lid)
28 strips of 13½-by-3/4-inch plastic bee foundation
Cinder blocks (Use the number you need to raise your hive to a comfortable level)

We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.

Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.
