Found this video on my old camera as I was cleaning it off. It's in 780, so the quality is not good, but since I don't have a lot going on right now to show you, I decided to edit it and post it. The top bar is just a fun hive for me and it has a strong colony in it, so I can actually use the stock and queen to split off some good bees. I'm not a fan of these for beginners down here in the deep south since there can be so many pitfalls with the heat and the wax comb. One mistake and you can flood the hive with honey. And that will drown and run the bees out. Ask me how I know. Had it happen about three times. but they are fun. Most all things with bees are fun. Well, hope you like the video.

Asian Hornets Threaten Britain
The Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet - Vespa velutina - has rampaged through France and for the last three years has occupied Jersey in the Channel Islands, threatening to invade mainland Britain using any means possible.
Several nests were found and destroyed in 2019 near the south coast of England, but we cannot be certain that others went unnoticed. This insect presents a clear and present danger to honeybees especially, with beekeepers in France losing about one in three of their hives every year to this pest. It will also cause big problems for other bees and other insects, as it has a voracious appetite and a talent for hunting down its prey.
Beekeepers will be very much on the front line in the battle to keep V. velutina out of this country, as we are likely to be the first to spot it. Do familiarise yourselves with its appearance and behaviour, and educate others so that we stand the best chance of intercepting it before it becomes established.
Visit http://ahat.co.uk for some excellent photos, which will help you distinguish it from similar-looking insects. If you can spare some time, join your local AHAT and learn how to trap and track it to its nest.

How Much Comb in Three Weeks? - Top Bar Hive 1st Check-up

How much honey and comb can the bees build in just 3-4 weeks? Check out the first hive inspection on our top-bar hive here on the SSL Family Homestead.
It has been a few weeks and I want to get in the hive and make sure everything is going ok. Well, honestly I just want to see what they are up to in there! I got my smoker all filled up and started and dawned my veil, jacket, and gloves. This will be the first time I have really been in the hive since I took out the queen and I am a novice so things could get interesting!
I opened the hive and the first thing I noticed was we had a freeloader! There was a small yellow jacket or hornets nest in the under side of the lid. No worries, it feels good to rip the nest out of the hive with all my protective gear on, finally I can fight the hornets without getting stung, this suit might come in handy!
All the feeders were empty, good sign there I think. As soon as I started moving the top bars I could tell the bees had been working hard in there. There were 5 top bars loaded with honeycomb, honey, pollen, and brood. This is a good sign and all seems well in the hive. I even got to take a small piece of comb and honey out that was attached to the side as a snack for the girls.
I moved the top bars around a bit and took out the feeders as they are no longer needed in the mid summer months. I opened up about 4 more top bars for them to build on and they still had another 4-5 on the other side. I am thinking I will need to open up more towards the end of July, in about 6 weeks.
The hive looks great and all seems to be well, I can't wait to get in and check on them again!

Chandler returns to Dallas

The Mavericks and the New York Knicks have consummated a six-player trade that sends center Tyson Chandler back to Dallas.
The Mavericks, who immediately made reacquiring Chandler one of their priorities after their first-round playoff exit against San Antonio, completed a trade with the Knicks that was clinched by agreeing to take back the contract of New York's out-of-favor guard Raymond Felton as well.
The trade cost Dallas two starters -- point guard Jose Calderon and center Samuel Dalembert -- along with prized young point guard Shane Larkin, reserve guard Wayne Ellington and the 34th and 51st picks in Thursday's draft.

The deal was first reported by ESPN.com's Marc Stein.
Chandler is the player Dallas has missed most since it decided to let go several key contributors in free agency after the team's championship run in 2011.
Chandler, 31, wound up landing a four-year, $60 million deal in free agency with the Knicks that year, a deal that has one season remaining.
The departures of Chandler and Felton are believed to be just the start of a roster overhaul by new Knicks president Phil Jackson, with Jackson pursing as much salary-cap flexibility as he can in the hopes of convincing star free-agent-to-be Carmelo Anthony to stay.
"The journey to build this team for the upcoming season and beyond continues," Jackson said in the announcement. "We have added players with this move that will fit right in to our system while maintaining future flexibility.
"We would like to thank Raymond and Tyson for their time and hard work with the organization over the past few years."
If the Knicks keep all players acquired in the deal they will have saved $3 million in cap space for this summer but forfeited $5.2 million in cap space in the summer of 2015, when they are expected to chase big-name free agents. The Knicks are currently over the salary cap and will only be able to use trade exceptions to lure free agents this summer.
