Hornets: last check on their nest in the top bar hive
At the Hive Entrance

For me, time spent watching bees is always time well spent. You can tell a lot about the mood and status of a colony from their behaviour at the entrance, where you can find clues as to whether you may need to open the hive to check further.

How to Help Bees Defend Themselves Against Wasps

I was asked to look at this hive, which was suffering from wasp attack. Here's what I found and what I did to help them defend themselves. See also the 'periscope entrance', which seems to be an effective deterrent against wasps and hornets.

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/M07WfEO6Iys[/embed]19302 views 72 likes 5 dislikes
Channel: Phil Chandler - Barefoot Beekeeper
Phil Chandler demonstrating how a swarm can be taken from a tree directly into a swarm basket. Top bars are added immediately and the bees left to build combs for 1-2 weeks, when they can easily be moved into a top bar hive.

Installing a Five-Pound Bee Package in a Top-Bar Hive Seen from Inside the Hive
[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/kDW5YuqhDvI[/embed]2224 views 23 likes 3 dislikes
Channel: Wyatt Mangum WAM
Here I am installing a package in a top bar hive with the camera inside the hive. Now you can see how the bees form their cluster like a bee in the hive. Segments of the video show the bees clustering until the next morning. (The bees roar load going in the hive, but that will quit.)
My top bar apiaries can be seen at TBHSbyWAM.com with the link there or search 200 top bar hives.
