How to Catch a Swarm of Bees: Part II - Moving bees from the swarm basket to a top bar hive

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/MUWsB5DjTrU[/embed]17427 views   88 likes   2 dislikes

Channel: Phil Chandler - Barefoot Beekeeper

www.biobees.com Having caught your swarm in a basket and placed top bars over them, leave them for a week or two in the exact spot where their hive is to be located. Then you can easily transfer them to their hive without any further disturbance - just watch and see how easy it is. Even making a slip and dropping a couple of bars doesn't bother them.

Hello and welcome back to Pine City Apiary. Today we are going to inspect Hive Face. We are looking for the Queen, for brood, eggs, larva, and for plenty of stores. In addition, we are also going to be looking for a bar to take from them over to Hive Stripe, so they can get a boost. Today, we also see why it is important to have more than just a single hive.

Top Bar Hive Inspection 2019

These are the first bees I've kept. This is my and their first full hive inspection. I caught a swarm into this hive late July last year , as it was so late in the season they only occupied half the bars , so I was a bit worried they wouldn't make it through the winter. But they did !
This is the beginning of the second season with these bees.

Thanks go to Phil Chandler the Barefoot Beekeeper ( biobees.com ).
And Special thanks to Joe at Furzeleigh Farm for all the support.

I thought I had a chance to save the bees in the Top Bar hive after they were bump by a tree that fell. The truth was that some careless handling one my part playeda big part in their demise.

The easiest - and cheapest - way to start beekeeping is with a swarm. If you can persuade a swarm to move into a hive of its own accord, that saves some work and possibly some tree-climbing.

A box of 30-40 litres capacity is about right, with some clean comb inside as bait. If you have no comb, a couple of drops of citronella or lemongrass essential oil will often do the trick, as it mimics the scent of the queen's pheromone.

This is a short (18") top bar hive that works well as a bait hive. It has the same profile as my other top bar hives, making it easy to transfer bees into a full-size box when needed. You can keep bees in a box this size if you don't mind them throwing swarms more often than they might in a bigger box.

The shallow box on top is an experimental super, which uses two rows of top bars spaced up to 50mm apart. It doubles up as a place to feed fondant if required in winter. Access for feeding is via a slot in one of the lower set of bars; it would need more open access for use as a super.

How to make an 'Eco Floor' for the Horizontal Top Bar Hive

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/SWB-pdlqeFQ[/embed]39339 views   152 likes   27 dislikes

Channel: Phil Chandler - Barefoot Beekeeper

A simple modification to the floor of the horizontal (Kenyan-style) top bar hive improves insulation, reduces air exchange at floor level and creates an enclosed ecosystem designed to provide habitat for earwigs, wood lice, moulds, fungi and myriad other flora and fauna that may be found inside the average hollow log - the natural habitat of the honeybee.

Phil Chandler shows how the deep floor is made and how it can be retro-fitted to any top bar hive made to his - or similar - design.

No creature on Earth lives in isolation from all others. All sorts of relationships develop between different species, many of them mutually beneficial. Yet honeybees are usually housed in sterile, wooden boxes with little opportunity to come into contact with the myriad other bugs, beetles and bacteria found in their natural habitat: hollow trees. Little is known about the effects on bees of other organisms, but it seems reasonable to suppose that because they have co-evolved with a whole range of other species over tens of millions of years, they will have developed mutually beneficial relationships with some of them.

The 'deep litter floor' is an experimental approach to creating an ecosystem within the bees' living quarters, such that these relationships can be re-established. Of particular interest is the mite Stratiolelaps scimitans, which is known to exist in the wild in Britain and is partial to the Varroa destructor mite, troublesome to bees.

Rescuing a Honeybee Colony - a comb cut-out from a condemned building

This colony had to be removed before the building they were in was demolished, so despite it being the wrong time of year to attempt this risky operation, we had to give it a shot.
We used a polystyrene Langstroth nucleus box in the upright position, tying combs into frames using soft cotton string.

Beekeeping in Norway - a chat with Ragna Jorgensen of Bybi

Ragna invited me to Norway to talk to beekeepers about the possibility of using different ways to look after bees, and different hives, including, of course, the top bar hive.

I had a very enjoyable week in this beautiful country, thanks to my hosts Ragna Jorgensen and Joshua, who will feature in the next podcast, once I have finished editing our long discussion in the car, while driving around the stunning north western coastline of Norway.

This recording was made in the woods outside Oslo, and I made the mistake of leaving my phone switched on (and receiving a swarm call) so please excuse the occasional radio frequency interference that this caused in my audio recorder.

Naturparadies Fuchsbau #7 - Bienen ziehen in Top Bar Hive ein

Channel: Naturparadies Fuchsbau

This is a very easy-build hive, made almost entirely from 4" x 1" (100mm x 25mm) timber. It can be used with frames or top bars and can be supered using half-size boxes.

This was my first attempt to use a Morris Board that was on the short side in terms of bee population. I have another one on a very strong hive in a different apiary that has produced consistently good results, and I expect this one to do the same once it is up to strength. It's a bit on the "quick and dirty" side, but I think it builds on my first Morris Board video. I hope you find it useful.

How to use the Morris Board to raise queens

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/7lXAauPK-Ps[/embed]4586 views   47 likes   4 dislikes

Channel: Phil Chandler - Barefoot Beekeeper

The Morris Board is device that can make the continuous raising of queen bees possible throughout the season. It is not difficult to make, although reasonable accuracy is required for it to operate smoothly. In this video, i explain the various parts and show how it all works.

The "emergency impulse" is triggered as soon as the colony discovers it is queenless, when the bees act swiftly to save themselves from certain disaster. They identify a few larvae that have just hatched and begin to extend their cells outwards and downwards, while packing them with extra rations of royal jelly. Because these queens will have been produced in a hurry, they may not be of the best quality, but at least one of them will be good enough to carry the colony until they can, if necessary, replace her at leisure later on, perhaps at a less critical time, by the planned process of supercedure, which takes place in the presence of - and therefore, we assume, with at least the acquiescence, if not the full assent of the laying queen - and which is believed to produce queens of the highest quality.

Since we cannot easily trigger the supercedure response, we start the ball rolling by inducing the emergency response, then switching conditions to those pertaining during supercedure, hoping to be rewarded with higher quality queens.

Home-Built Micro-Camper on Trailer Tent Chassis

Channel: Phil Chandler - Barefoot Beekeeper

I built this lightweight mobile workshop/micro-camper/utility trailer on a galvanized chassis that was once a Conway trailer tent.
Construction is mostly 2"x1" timber frames filled with urethane foam insulation (Celotex) surfaced with an acrylic mesh used for garden weed suppression, bonded with thinned Titebond II wood glue and painted with Ronseal garden paint.
The design was improvised and somewhat modified as I went along, so don't ask for plans because there never were any!

(The video was shot on a Samsung ES65 that I picked up for £5 in a charity shop, in old-school 4:3 format, which I still prefer because of the greater height of the image compared with 16:9. Obviously, there is a quality penalty using 640x480 compared with 1080p and 4K, but I wanted to see what it would do.)

Two Queen Bees in One Hive!

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/NPehW7oZUMM[/embed]3800 views   18 likes   1 dislikes

Channel: Phil Chandler - Barefoot Beekeeper

Supercedure is the process by which honeybees replace a failing queen. A queen cell is built - usually just one - most often in a recess in the middle of a comb. When the new queen emerges, she will mate and begin laying eggs while her mother is still alive and the two queens will often work together for a few weeks until the old queen is no longer viable, when her workers will cease to feed her.

This colony in a top bar hive is thriving despite having had no Varroa treatment for 2+ seasons. They have nearly filled the hive, so we are splitting them by inserting a follower between two pairs of entrance holes. The side nearest the camera has sealed queen cells, while the laying queen is in the far side. One the new queen has emerged, mated and begun to lay, we can either re-combine them and remove the old queen, or place them in an empty hive.

The Quadratic have was designed to be versatile, and in this video I show you some of the ways you can use it.

Featured is a prototype Quadratic Hive made from recycled bottle tops - possibly a world first - by Paul at LUSH cosmetics in Poole, Dorset (thanks, Paul).

PLEASE NOTE: The Quadratic Hive featured in this video is a prototype. I do not suggest that you build hives using recycled or other plastics, or use hot glue as the sole method of jointing on hives, except on an experimental basis. Most of my hives are made from wood and I will continue to use wood as my main material for hive building.

Bob Hogge from Jersey talks about the invading Asian hornet

The Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet, Vespa velutina, is a serious threat to bees and beekeeping in Britain, given its predatory nature and the fact that a large nest may contain 10-12,000 hungry insects.

It also poses a secondary threat to birds and bats, as it has the ability to consume massive numbers of their prey, while themselves being virtually immune from attack by any of our native species.

PLEASE LEARN ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS PEST and look out for news about it, preferably by checking the news page on https://friendsofthebees.org and don't rely on newspapers, which regularly feature pictures of the wrong species.

There is an Android app called "Asian Hornet Watch" that makes identification and reporting easy: this is an invasive non-native species that must be reported to http://www.brc.ac.uk/risc/alert.php?species=asian_hornet

If you use FaceBook, look for my page "Defending Britain Against the Asian Hornet" for news and updates.

Top bar honey processing with Mann Lake uncapping tank

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/9l-Z2HFKLuw[/embed]42269 views   147 likes   28 dislikes

Channel: John Drieman

This is by far the most efficient way to crush and strain top bar honey combs. The large size of the tank allows for processing of 10 or 20 combs at once, just give the wax a few days to drain of honey. A standard oven rack fits nicely over top of the tank, and any 2 smaller stainless steel wire cooling racks layed over top at right angles will do as a crushing surface. You could tape the oven rack to the sides of the tank to keep things from moving around. The sieves are a combo of a coarse plastic type and a fine stainless steel (available at Canadian Tire). This way you can clean out the plastic sieve during the straining process to avoid clogging.

Early Season Varroa Dusting and Top Bar Hive Check

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/j19FptJUB8M[/embed]31972 views   73 likes   7 dislikes

Channel: Phil Chandler

http://www.biobees.com Dusting bees with powdered sugar is an effective way to keep Varroa infestations down to manageable levels. While not being 100% effective, it is at least non-toxic and does the bees no harm, unlike many commercial treatments manufactured from synthetic ingredients.
This video also demonstrates that checking through a top bar hive is no more difficult than checking a framed hive. When you consider how few bees are disturbed in this video, compared to what happens when you rip the top off a conventional hive, you may begin to see how suitable these hives are for beginners and experienced beekeepers alike.

If you try this, do make sure you have positively identified it as a male, as the sting of the female is painful.

I am growing shiitake (Lentinula edodes); blue-grey oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) and wine cap (Stropharia rugosoannulata) from mycelium grown on wild bird seed, which has been soaked and sterilized and after myceliation, is added to barley straw.

Home-Built Micro-Camper on Trailer Tent Chassis

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/huwmDhIaTQM[/embed]189 views   10 likes   0 dislikes

European hornets (Vespa crabro) like to find a cosy, protected place to build their nest, as they build it with paper made from chewed wood, which is not waterproof. A queen hornet decided that an unoccupied top bar hive was the perfect location, especially as there were snack bars next door.

TopBar bee hive honey harvest - first time How to

Harvesting honey from my top bar bee hives that I built this past spring to house 4 feral bee swarms that I was able to capture. It has been a super fun learning experience and I'm happy that I'm able to harvest a small bit of honey for my efforts.
I'm NO expert and make TONS of mistakes in my handling of bees. I'm still learning and am merely showing how I'm currently doing this with limited experience and knowledge. Nothing I do should be considered the right/correct way to handle or work around bees and if you choose to do this or anything... you do so at your own risk.

Bee Hut - Reverence for Bees with Jacqueline Freeman

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/embed/6f8XeH1GFcU[/embed]23238 views   220 likes   4 dislikes

Channel: paul wheaton

http://permies.com Jacqueline Freeman of Friendly Haven Rise Farm is my favorite beekeeper. Rather than raising thousands of colonies and focusing on honey production or crop pollination, she raises just a few and focuses on the happiness of the bees. I have visited beekeepers that show respect for the bees, but Jacqueline takes it much farther and shows reverence for the bees. In this video she shows us her bee shelter, or, as she calls it "a bee house".

When hives are on the south side of a bee hut, or bee shelter like this, then they get shade in the summer, sun in the winter and all year protection from rain. They are up, off the damp ground. This makes the hive easier for the bees to care for, healthier bees and an increase in honey production. Sometimes honey production can be increased as much as five fold.

Jacqueline points out that the pacific northwest has the same weather as the United Kingdom: wet and drizzly.

These hives are mite free. What does Jacqueline use to keep the mites off? Nothing. No miticides. No insecticides. None of the so-called "organic" solutions (powdered sugar, essential oils). What she does do is provide three season nectar forage close by. If the bees don't have to go far to get their nectar, then that is less stress. And they are getting nectar that is high qaulity and free of pesticides or herbicides. Plus, since she has just a few hives, the bees get all the nectar they need from nearby - jacqueline's property wouldn't be enough to feed a hundred hives, so the bees would have to venture farther and to lower quality nectar sources.

Since the hives are protected in the bee hut, then they don't need paint!

The Friendly Haven Rise Farm website is at http://friendlyhaven.com/

I want to thank Barthélémy Glumineau http://studiomelies.com for editing this video and making it look so damn professional!
